Product Description

A classic Zapotec design colloquially referred to as the Caracol (or “snail” in English) is beautifully woven using a mix of white and shades of grey. This rug has a gentle, mellow appeal, most attractive in a subtle and understated way and ideal for areas of the home with a peaceful ambience. The rug is finished with two bands of grey which define and contain pattern. Hand-woven, this 100% wool rug contains no dyes, only natural shades of wool. Sorting wool into different shades is a very lengthy process that requires patience and a good eye for colour. Grey colours are achieved by carding white and black wool together, and beige shades are obtained from the wool around the hauches. The detail of the design makes its weaving a very time consuming process, as the little bundles of wool constantly have to be changed.
The rug is made using traditional Zapotec methods under the supervision of Don Isaac Vásquez, the man credited with reviving the disappearing pre-Hispanic techniques, along with famous Mexican artist Francisco Toledo.
